Inertial Measurement Unit (IM³™)

The IM³™ developed by Archangel Systems, Inc. is a six axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) System in a single ¾" cube. This cube measures and thermally compensates accelerations in three orthogonal axes (local X, Y and Z) and rotational velocities in three orthogonal axes (about local X, Y and Z). This IMU sensor is the enabling technology for Attitude Heading Reference Systems (AHRS), Air Data Attitude Heading Reference Systems (ADAHRS), Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), and other stability products used in land, sea and air vehicles.

Partial funding for development of this sensor was through Phase I and II contracts, funded by the Missile Defense Agency’s Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Program and managed by the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (Huntsville, AL). The IM³™ will provide an inexpensive and highly accurate alternative to conventional IMUs. Typical applications of the IM³™ are stability control systems, pointing systems, flight control systems, vehicle dynamics monitoring & control, attitude heading reference systems, bore hole monitoring, as well as a host of others.

Every IM³™ undergoes burn in and complete temperature and scale factor calibrations over their entire range of operation. Using the processor internal to the cube, these calibrations are used to output corrected data over either an asynchronous TTL compatible 232 port at up to 460K BAUD or a synchronous SPI port at up to 2 M Bit/s. Available standard configurations are IMU, IMU-AHRS and IMU-INS with gyro rates up to 300°/s and accelerations up to 10 gees. Custom configurations with expanded gyro ranges up to 3000 °/s or for specialty applications are also available.
