May 12, 2010 - Archangel Receives FAA TSO Approval for its AFC001 Automatic Flight Control.

Auburn, AL - Archangel Systems Inc. announced today it has received FAA TSO C9c approval to manufacture its Automatic Flight Control (AFC001). The AFC receives ARINC 429 data and converts it to 2 wire, isolated DC outputs, suitable to drive most autopilot servos/servo amps.  The AFC also creates error signals for heading, roll, pitch, & altitude to enable attitude & altitude hold functions.

The AFC was developed originally to interface Archangel’s Air Data Attitude Heading Reference System (AHR150A) to aircraft with legacy autopilot servos/servo amps.  Archangel’s AFC has 100% DO178b Level B operating software. The AFC monitors input ARINC 429 data as well as internal functions.  It has two fault outputs: ADAHRS fault and AFC fault. Data outputs of the AFC are Roll Angle, Roll Angle Error, Pitch Angle, Pitch Angle Error, Roll Rate, Yaw Rate, Heading Error, Altitude Error, True Airspeed & Lateral Acceleration.

The AFC measures 2.63″ (H) by 5.73″ (L) by 5.25″ (W), weighs 2.2 lbs and operates from 16 to 36 VDC using less than 10 Watts maximum.

January 29, 2010 - Archangel Awarded SBIR Contract to Study Rad-hard Location & Attitude Module (R-LAM)

Auburn AL , January 29, 2010 – Archangel Systems, Inc. announced today that it has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract to study a Radiation Hardened Location & Attitude Module (R-LAM). R-LAM promises a new generation of both integrated navigation modules and stand-alone navigation subsystems including nav-grade IMU’s, atomic-precision clocks and GPS units compliant with the Space Plug and Play Architecture (SPA) initiative.

This SBIR project will leverage Archangel’s NG-MARS (a spinning mass IMU with navigation-grade performance), Symmetricom’s Chip-Scale Atomic Clock, and NASA-Goddards’ Rad-hard GPS (Navigator for the Magnetospheric Multiscale program).

February 11, 2010 - Archangel’s Director of Quality Appointed as FAA DMIR

Auburn, AL - Archangel Systems Inc. announced today that Mr. Ronal E. Turner has been appointed as an Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Designated Manufacturing Inspection Representative (DMIR) assigned to Archangel Systems Inc. per Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations § 183.31.  Mr. Turner has been granted all responsibilities and authorizations to perform FAA manufacturing inspections as indicated in FAA function codes; Code 01, Code 03, Code 05, Code 06, and Code 07.

Mr. Turner also functions as Archangel’s Director of Quality.  He has been instrumental in leading Archangel’s ISO9001 efforts.

January 26, 2010 - Archangel Receives FAA TSO Approval for its AHR150A and AHR300A Air Data Attitude Heading Reference Systems

Auburn, AL - Archangel Systems Inc. announced today it has received FAA TSO C4c, C5f, C6e, C88b and C106 approval to manufacture its family of Air Data Attitude Heading Reference Systems (ADAHRS). The ADAHRS family consists of the AHR150A and AHR300A with maximum gyro output rates of 128°/s and 256°/s respectively. Each system is composed of two boxes: an Inertial Sensing Unit (-1) and a Magnetic Sensing Unit (-2).

These ADAHRS meet all the requirements of TSO C5f for an Unslaved Direction Gyro (using all solid state MEMS sensors), C4c for Pitch and Bank, and C6e for Gyro Stabilized Magnetic Heading. The systems also meet the requirements of C106 for an Air Data computer as well as C88b for Altitude Reporting Equipment, using an 11 wire discrete interface compatible with most transponders.

Developed originally for fly-by-wire aircraft, Archangel’s ADAHRS have 100% DO178b Level A operating software in all five processors used in both the ISU and MSU. The ISU has multiple, redundant, dissimilar processors computing both air data and attitude data to ensure data validity. Data are presented on eight ARINC 429 busses (4 Lo Speed and 4 Hi Speed).

The ISU measures 4.25″ by 4.25″ by 5.25″, weighs 3.1 lbs and operates from 16 to 36 VDC using less than 20 Watts maximum. The MSU is approximately 3″ round by 0.75″, weighs 0.5 lbs and is powered by the ISU.

August 31, 2009 - Archangel Awarded Phase IV DARPA Contract to Develop Navigation Grade IMU

Auburn, AL - Archangel Systems Inc. announced today it has been awarded a Phase IV contract to continue development of a Navigation Grade version of the MARS device and MARS based Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), under the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) Navigation Grade Integrated Micro-Gyroscope (NGIMG) program.

The general purpose of this competitively awarded DARPA contract is to investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems. The specific purpose is to develop a micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) implementation of NGIMG, with the ultimate objective being the realization of tiny, low-power, rotation rate sensors capable of achieving performance commensurate with requirements for GPS-denied navigation of small platforms, including individual soldiers, unmanned (micro) air vehicles, unmanned underwater vehicles, and even tiny (e.g., insect-sized) robots. By harnessing the advantages of micro-scale miniaturization, the NGIMG program is expected to yield tiny (if not chip-scale) gyroscopes with navigation-grade performance characteristics Successful completion of this 54 month project will enable completely autonomous navigation without any reliance on GPS. Project goals are gyro bias stability of 0.1°/hr and angular random walk of 0.005°/hr in a one cubic cm package using less than 100mW of power for a six axis IMU.

NGIMG-enabled devices with characteristics similar to that listed above and achieved via low cost, batch fabrication methods are expected to enable a myriad of strategic capabilities. In particular, the sheer portability of the rotation rate sensors sought by the NGIMG program should introduce a host of new applications and deployment scenarios, including wearable inertial measurement units (IMU’s) for dismounted warriors capable of GPS-denied navigation for lengthy periods; small IMU’s for unmanned air and underwater vehicles, and for guidance of small, long-range munitions; and tiny IMU’s for insect-like robots intended for a variety of future applications, including first warning perimeter sensing. Together with chip-scale atomic clocks (CSAC’s) and location-tracking algorithms that harness additional kinetic information (e.g., biokinetic), chip-scale NGIMG’s should allow man-portable dead-reckoning devices with unprecedented precision, with and without GPS. By enabling a swelling of applications, as illustrated above, miniaturization via NGIMG technology is expected to generate a need for high volume manufacturing that, together with wafer-level batch fabrication methods enabled by MEMS technology, should substantially lower the cost of miniature navigation systems, and thus, further fuel expansion of the application suite for NGIMG technology.

September 23, 2008 - Archangel Receives Patent for MEMS Annular Rotating System

Archangel Systems, Inc. announced today that it has been issued Patent No. 7,426,859 from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the invention of a “Motion Sensor and Method for Detecting Motion”.

A motion sensor may detect linear and/or angular acceleration and/or angular velocity of a body relative to one axis, two orthogonal axes or three orthogonal axes. Movement of the body or reference structure may be detected relative to one or more spinning rotors. The rotor(s) may be suspended for rotation and/or other movement relative to the reference structure without physical contacting the reference structure. In one embodiment, the rotor(s) may be electrostatically suspended in such a way that movement of the rotor(s) relative to the reference structure may be detected.

The inventors are Dr. Michael Greene, CEO and Mr. Victor Trent, Director of Engineering at Archangel Systems.

Archangel Systems, Inc. announced today that Mr. Karthik Narayanan has been promoted to Head of Software Systems.  Mr. Narayanan began his career at Archangel in May 2006, working as an Engineer II.  During that period he was responsible for software development of Archangel’s AHR150A (Air Data Attitude Heading Reference System). He also has been a significant contributor to the FAA certification for this product.

The new position of Head of Software Systems was created to focus on the importance of software in overall system design and performance.

Mr. Dillard was previously the Associate Director of Engineering at Archangel, working on and directing projects including:  a navigation grade MEMS Inertial Measurement Unit (Defense Advanced Research Project Agency), a Body Orientation Sensing System (U.S Department of Transportation), and a Head Alignment & Orientation System (U.S. Air Force).
